Email List Opt-In

Hi folks! I'm happy to share that this project is mostly complete—you can now add the direct sign-up link to your organization's newsletter list in the "organization" tab on your dashboard (https://www.globalgiving.org/dy/v2/pe/manage/organizations.html).
Then, we've added the following call-outs to some different email templates: for project appeals, thank you notes, and project reports. Your organization's name will be auto-populated (so it won't say GlobalGiving—the example in these screenshots is from a GlobalGiving disaster fund). These are at the bottom of the email templates, so the people who ended up subscribing to your newsletter will probably be your most engaged supporters.
Let me know what you think about the language here—it's an easy tech fix to adjust if you think it's confusing.
In the next week or so, I'm going to publish an article on the GlobalGiving Insider Blog with more information on this project and how to make the most of it.

Miranda Cleland: I like the language and I'm glad to see this feature! Thanks for working on it, GG. Very easy to set up.

The solution we discussed on this thread earlier (an organization-specific email list sign-up link added to report/thank you note/appeal templates) will be getting started soon! I'll share a mockup of the opt-in box on this thread once it's ready. Thank you everyone for your continued patience and thoughtful feedback!

We support projects in two countries that are technically at war with each other. Because of this we have separate mailing lists and allow people to support particular projects. This helps us keep donors who wouldn't want to support "the other side". If we added our mailchimp sign up forms we would need to be able to add different forms for our different projects. Sadly, even though we help the most vulnerable in society, not the politicians or military, there are some people who don't want to be reminded that we are in both countries.
Miranda Cleland
Sarah Gale: Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing this perspective. Definitely good for us to keep in mind. I was initially thinking that the sign-up form would be at the organization level, but we will investigate if it's possible to add at the project level.

Fully agree with this!

Hi everyone! Thanks for your thoughtful suggestions regarding email list opt-in. We really appreciate it, and have discussed a possible solution:
Adding a section to the email templates for project reports, appeals, and thank you notes that includes a direct link to your organization's newsletter sign-up list (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, etc.). This would likely be in the footer of the email, and would say something like, "Want to hear more from Aid Afghanistan for Education? Subscribe to their newsletter." The donor would follow the link and add their subscription information.
What do you think about this idea? If you have other suggestions, we'd love to hear them! Just reply to this comment.
We aren't planning to add additional checkboxes to the checkout, however, because of the risk of impacting our currently high conversion rates, and are not planning to do CRM integration because of our privacy policy.

Miranda Cleland: I think this is a great solution; the donor gets to decide.

Christine Bedenis
Miranda Cleland: I'm not sure that is necessarily clear, as they may already think they are on the email list since they are being contacted via email. I know I would be confused if I got an email, ostensibly from an organization, that said sign up to get our emails.
Is there a way to A/B test a checkbox at the checkout to see if it impacts conversion rates?
Josie Shields-Stromsness
Miranda Cleland: Given the limitations around integration and the concern about conversion rates if you add another check-box, this seems like a good work around. Thank you!
Kay Sweeney
Miranda Cleland: Sounds good!
Warren Te Brugge
Miranda Cleland: I’m comfortable with that as it would help us to see who is actually reading the entire report and that they are willingly and consciously opting in. Side note: It work as long as it does not get a ‘rejection’ because of the external link when submitting reports.
Sylvester Renner
Miranda Cleland: could we possibly see a mock-up / screenshot of what this would look like in the footer? Possibly some donors would not read that far. Footer text is often given a much lower priority and focus.

I agree - adding this to the footer could be confusing / unclear.
Is there a way to segment this so that the A/B testing would be on the
organization level
? In other words, the organization could flip a switch to decide when to include the check box. Any impact would then be Isolated to the organization.Miranda Cleland
Warren Te Brugge: Good point, Warren! This would likely involve adding a section to the email template, so you wouldn't have to worry about the link rejection issue.
Miranda Cleland
Sylvester Renner: Yes, we will share a mock-up on this thread once it's ready! You're right that most donors won't read all the way to the end, but the ones who do and subscribe are likely very engaged and the most likely to support your work in the future.
Miranda Cleland
Sylvester Renner: I'll check with our tech team about org-level A/B testing the checkout box and report back. My instinct is no, but I'll make sure.

Totally agree, we really want our donors to feel connected since they have chosen to invest in our cause. Email opt-in option would be great.
